From the EMEA Peer Group: What the CFO Wants From Legal
On June 2, our EMEA Peer Group session brought together Matt DenOuden and Jo Guy from Onit with Tim Strong, Global Head of Legal Transformation at Kroll, to unpack what the modern CFO really needs from legal, and where most teams still fall short. A few key takeaways:
- The CFO–CLO conversation has changed. It has moved from reporting legal costs after the fact to bringing Finance in early, as a partner in lowering costs rather than a scorekeeper.
- “Legible” is the goal. Legal does not need to become Finance. It needs to be readable to Finance, with risk expressed in dollars, dates, and probabilities. Tim Strong graded most legal teams a solid B today, and said the gap is adoption and process, not technology.
- 80% of outside counsel matters run over budget (Gartner, December 2025). The reframe from the room: this is structural, not shameful. Active matter management, with legal and finance sharing data, is what moves the number.
- Surprise avoidance is a budget argument. The CFO has a direct vote on what systems legal procures, so early warnings and predictability are also the business case for further investment.
- AI ROI is still the unsolved problem. There is no standard way to measure the return on AI in legal ops yet. The AI Peer Group is building a survey to tackle exactly this.

At CLOC 2026, Jean Yang sat down with two leaders navigating AI transformation at scale: Siddharth Shah, Director of Technology, AI & Automation at Intel, and Aaron Van Nice, VP of Legal Affairs, Regulatory & Compliance (Operational Excellence) at ADM. The conversation covered three themes: AI transformation roadmaps, workforce and talent evolution, and how the legal department itself is changing.

- Aaron Van Nice expects a real shift in where work sits between in house, the business and external vendors. He has been in dialogue with his law firms about how they should be leveraging AI, and he is hiring new kinds of talent, like Legal Engineers, to support the shift.
- Siddharth Shah shared his AI heatmap, a framework for working out which use cases make sense for AI and which do not. Not everything is an AI problem to be solved. Having already worked through many AI use cases in legal, Siddharth is now focused on "UI for AI", an orchestration layer that brings together all the agents they have built.
