is there a way to bulk upload docs, using, for example, FTP, or selecting an entire list of docs?

This is great question. There is a way to upload multiple documents but it is not from the main document screen. This is under consideration for the product roadmap.

If you create a Project Plan item in a project, you can attach as many files as you you like. Simply select the Add another file link and you can add multiple attachments.
